Digital Twin and LIDAR: The best ML investments for the future

Films like DUNE, BLADE RUNNER, and the ever classic BACK TO THE FUTURE have long brought us entertainment and speculation about what the future would look like for us- today, I’m here to tell you, we are living in the future right now.

As I mentioned in my last blog on Vision AI, no the robots are not taking over, but they are gaining exponential capacity and complexity. Futureworld technology is the most cutting edge, the highest of high tech, and developments being made today are going to drastically shape our future.

Before we dive into these technologies- what is futureworld? Futureworld is based around improvements to current technologies and emergent technologies across all sectors. The radical novelty of futureworld technologies will challenge the status quo and will have a significant impact on the geo-socio-economic future.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are at the forefront of these futureworld technologies. As suggested by the “ML” in SpringML, these are two topics very near and dear to our hearts, as well as being a core part of our business, and today I’d like to discuss two futureworld solutions in which we’re investing: LIDAR and Digital Twin.

LIDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging, for those not in the know, this concept is better explained by the below image:

LIDAR technology leverages light in the form of pulsation to create three-dimensional images that are highly precise and give a sense of spacial differentiations. LIDAR has limitless applications, but our expert opinion is that over the course of the next few years LIDAR will be heavily used by government, manufacturers, construction/real estate, and begin bleeding into retailers.

The LIDAR technology creates an almost augmented reality view that gives the viewer a much more realistic view of space compared to traditional blueprinting or 2d images.

Digital Twin

Digital twin as defined by IBM is “a virtual representation of an object or system that spans its lifecycle, is updated from real-time data, and uses simulation, machine learning, and reasoning to help decision-making.”

My colleague, Palash, wrote a fantastic piece on how Digital Twin can create efficiency along retail supply chains (click here to check it out) – but what does this mean for other industries?

One major targeted use for Digital Twin is a digital twin for you! It’s projected in the next two decades that clinical trials will no longer be conducted on live humans, but rather will be enacted on a digital twin or avatar versions of each of us. Just imagine, a world in which you have a cold, your doctor prescribes a method of treatment to your digital twin, then your treatment method proceeds or is altered based on the outcome of your digital twin’s health. MIND BLOWN.

While all of these futureworld technologies are exciting, I want to take a moment here to note a big concern on everyone’s mind- social responsibility. Any good thing in the wrong hands or misapplied can become a tricky and even dangerous situation. At SpringML we’re committed to using our powers for good and ensuring our partners do as well. It’s an honor to create visions of the future, and with that great power, comes great responsibility.
