Immigration Law Firm Implements Machine Learning for Document Extraction

Business Situation

BAL Global receives hundreds of immigration documents during the normal course of business.  These forms are manually scanned to PDF and data on the forms are then manually entered into various systems. The goal of this project was to automate classifying, separating, sorting, and extracting data from PDF documents to improve efficiency and increase accuracy of data entry. 

Google Cloud Implementation

SpringML leveraged Vision AI and the Google Cloud Platform to extract text from documents and Google App Engine for orchestration.  Several immigration documents like I-797 and I-94 used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection were parsed by Machine Learning techniques to extract key fields like Receipt Number, Receipt Date, and Notice Date. With automated document parsing and field extraction, BAL was able to reduce manual effort processing these typical forms and increase accuracy of data input into various systems.

Although we live in an increasingly digital world, the need to process printed documents remains a critical component of every business. But manually collecting data from forms to enter it into a database is an expensive, tedious process prone to errors. Automating the extraction of text and populating it into the appropriate field in adatabase is the answer, but it’s a complex process. Every document, even those of the same type, has a different layout, so an automated text extraction system needs Machine Learning support to teach itself to recognize data so it can be added to the database correctly without human intervention.

Results

BAL Global was able to automate document processing for immigration forms and reduce human errors using the implemented approach.
