Employee Highlight: Robin Bass

SpringML: What is your current position at SpringML?

Bass: I’m an Engagement Manager/Project Manager for the Salesforce Delivery Practice, with an emphasis on Oil & Gas customers. I strive to create confidence in our company and team’s ability to deliver, especially in times of high stress. One of my customer’s recently observed that I effectively kept most of the chaos from them and managed it…even the chaos from within their organization that could easily derail our project….and agreed that it was my ‘super power’.

SpringML: What’s the first thing you do when you come into work and last to wrap up the workday?

Bass: I start almost every day at 7am with a daily standup team meeting. Since we all work virtually, its a great way to stay aligned. Towards the end of the day, I’m reviewing my schedule and my project schedules for the next day, if not entire week, to ensure my teams are focused appropriately, and taking any necessary actions to prepare for customer meetings and deliverables. I’m constantly asking myself, what can go wrong to derail our project and then, what can we do about it? This is the best tool in a PMs tool kit.

SpringML: Before joining SpringML, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Bass: I worked almost 8 years as an engineer in the space industry for both Shuttle and Station. One of the many projects I managed involved designing and building out the level 0 (no security) networks into both the (new) Consolidated Control Center and the historical Mission Control Center that you see in movies, attending meetings with Space legends such as Glenn Lunney, Gene Krantz, and many astronauts. I was at one point responsible for the RNET (reconfiguration network) which we used to transmit the entire shuttle computing system load just 2 days before a mission.

SpringML: If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

Bass: Gene Krantz! Read his book, Failure is not an Option…and you’ll know why.

SpringML: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Bass: Better to just admit being wrong, then ending up being dead right. – my mom

What are 3 words to describe SpringML?

Bass: Agile, Youthful, Techno-Saavy

SpringML: Best vacation you’ve been to?

Bass: I’d have to say my trip to India for a wedding and site seeing was the best vacation. This involved three weeks of wedding parties, living like a local in an apartment in a Delhi grotto, sleeping in a British luxury hotel outside of Jaipur where royals and heads of state stayed, touring up to Shimla by trains, and to Agra, Rajastran, and Jaipur by private car. The markets are the best! But I was told to not show my interest and allow my local host to go back and negotiate for me. This worked amazing for lodging too!

How do you find a work/life balance?

Bass: Working in a small company means a lot depends on each person more so than in big companies/big teams. I tend to work super hard hours when required knowing that if I don’t, then others are directly impacted. This does mean that at times, my personal life takes a hit. But then feeling successful at work is part of my overall balance. But working virtually certainly helps the balance a lot …as I can pick up and work from wherever even the hospital :).
