NOAA Fisheries Smart Analytics and Machine Learning Preserving Ocean Life
NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the stewardship of the nation’s ocean resources and habitat. They provide vital services all backed by sound science and an ecosystem-based approach to management, while leading in emerging and innovative technologies. NOAA Fisheries has the goal of constructing a modernized IT system approach that includes analytics, machine learning, cloud technology, and artificial intelligence to inform enforcement staff to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. Specifically, the Office of Law Enforcement (OLE) wants to uncover new ways to identify IUU fish activity and quickly translate that information into visual and intuitive actionable tools.
Join this session to learn how OLE staff can use various data streams, leveraging predictive analytic algorithms to automate and alert on specified scenarios, allocate monitoring resources more effectively, and enhance case documentation.

Memphis is focused on easy living, and we want to do everything we can to keep our citizens happy. Working with Google and SpringML to reduce potholes and urban blight using machine learning and artificial intelligence was an easy decision. Using SpringML and Google Cloud Platform to detect indicators of vacant or blighted properties will help Memphis create safer neighborhoods that will be more attractive to businesses and home buyers. Property values and employment will go up, crime will go down, and social services can be more focused and effective.
– Mike Rodriguez, CIO, City of Memphis
Our goal is to become a smart city, and technologies such as Google Cloud Platform and SpringML put us ahead of the game. Google understands data, and there isn’t a better company to help us analyze our data resources for actionable insights
– Jim Strickland, Mayor, City of Memphis
We normally have 30,000 visitors per day coming through our airports. At the beginning of COVID, the small number of travelers we did have was easy to handle. But once you start heading back up to 30,000 per day, you need technology that can scale up easily and continue to be fast. The system now routinely handles 25,000 or more per day. The state government wanted visitors to be able to come here—and for residents to feel safe, and for everyone to actually be safe. We have been able to welcome visitors back to Hawaii while maintaining the lowest case counts in the United States.
– Doug Murdock, CIO, Office of Enterprise Technology Services, State of Hawaii
We held our first discovery call during the first day or two in March and had the actual sign-up page launched on Friday, March 12… Thanks to the sheer volume of resources that were brought to bear by the Google Cloud team, our users had a smooth experience using an incredibly stable application.
– Matthew Moran, Assistant Secretary of the Executive Office of Technology Services and Security, Commonwealth of Massachusetts
The success of the Wildlife Tracker project using GCP and BQ has fundamentally changed how we approach data storage and application infrastructure. We have achieved the elusive goal of being able to visualize wildlife movement across the landscape of Utah at a scale we didn’t imagine. We think differently now.
– Buck Ehler, GIS Manager, State of Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
The new Virtual Agent provides an efficient way to help our residents get the critical City services they need while reducing the burden on our call center. Furthermore, the Virtual Agent’s machine learning language translation features improve equity for residents who are not fluent in English.
– Jerry Driessen, CTO, City of San Jose
With SlowCOVIDNC App, North Carolinians have another powerful tool to help slow the spread of COVID-19 right in their pockets. Downloading SlowCOVIDNC is a practical step each of us can take to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our state
– Mandy K. Cohen NCDHHS Secretary, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
We must continue to fight COVID-19 from every possible angle. The COVIDWISE exposure notification app gives you an additional tool to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community while maintaining your personal privacy. I encourage all Virginians to download and use this app, so we can work together to contain this virus.
– Ralph Northam, Governor of Virginia, Commonwealth of Virginia
The best thing about the app is it enables volunteers with very little training to produce reliable, mistake-proof contributions to this important cause. I am really proud of it and fully endorse SpringML. Came through big time.
– Jeff Mulitalo, Deputy Director and Chief Strategy Officer, State of Utah
City of Las Vegas, Google Cloud, and SpringML worked as one team to deliver this solution to help the city contain COVID-19 exposure. The SpringML team brought in the right level of technical expertise and delivered at speed.
– Al Pitts, Manager, Enterprise Data & Analytics, City of Las Vegas
Our goal with this project was to try AI-based solutions to solve real-world problems and provide better customer service to our constituents. We see this project as the beginning of using and integrating AI & ML technologies to transform the business process at the city.
– Mrudul Sadanandan, IT Manager – Enterprise Applications, City of Sacramento
